Whitey Herzog, the Hall of Fame manager who led the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series championship in the 1980s, died on Monday in St. Louis. He was 92 and had been the second-oldest Hall of Famer after Willie Mays. “Baseball has been good to me since I quit trying to play it,” Herzog liked to say. Signed by the Yankees in 1949, he never made it out of their minor league system, though he picked up a lifetime of baseball knowledge from Manager Casey Stengel at spring training camps. He played the outfield for four American League teams over eight seasons with only modest success.

When does spring begin? For some, it’s the second Sunday in March, when we turn our clocks forward by an hour in the United States. It’s only a three-hour flight from La Guardia (rainy, cold) to West Palm Beach (sunny, 81 degrees, slight breeze), and from there an hour’s drive to Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, the spring training home of the New York Mets. Don Gullett, a standout major league pitcher who played for four consecutive World Series champions in the 1970s, died on Wednesday. The Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees and Baseball Hall of Fame all paid tribute to Gullett in social media posts. Gullett went 109-50 with a 3.11 ERA in nine seasons with the Reds and Yankees. He then signed with New York in free agency, and the Yankees won it all in ‘77 and ’78. “Don dedicated 24 years to this franchise as a player, coach and minor league instructor," Reds owner Bob Castellini said in a team post on X.

New York CNN —For the first time in Major League Baseball history, a woman will be the primary play-by-play voice of a major team. NBC Sports California said Tuesday it has chosen Jenny Cavnar, a broadcasting veteran with nearly two decades of baseball experience, for the prestigious role. “It is a dream come true to join the broadcast team for the Oakland A’s and their rich baseball history,” Cavnar said in a release. Doris Burke is among the NBA’s most well-respected color commentators, and she has been broadcasting national games for ESPN for 11 years. And in 2018, Andrea Kremer and Hannah Storm called an NFL game for Amazon, the first all-woman booth for a professional football national broadcast.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Free-agent reliever Wandy Peralta and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $16.5 million, four-year contract, a person with knowledge of the deal said Wednesday. The person spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical exam and hadn’t been finalized. The 32-year-old left-hander spent the last three seasons with the New York Yankees. While they still have big holes elsewhere heading into spring training, the budget-minded Padres at least have a well-stocked bullpen. NEW YORK (AP) — Brad Ausmus was hired by the New York Yankees on Tuesday to replace Carlos Mendoza as bench coach for manager Aaron Boone. Now 54, Ausmus spent 2022 as the Oakland Athletics' bench coach for manager Bob Melvin. Mendoza had been the Yankees' bench coach for four seasons when he left on Nov. 13 to manage the New York Mets. The Yankees said Tuesday that Ausmus will become the third bench coach for Boone, who started with Josh Bard as his bench coach in 2018-19. Ausmus hit .251 with 80 homers and 607 RBIs in 18 seasons for the Padres (1993-96), Detroit (1996, 1999-2000) and Houston (1997-98, 2001-08).
